Description
This course introduces students to the cultural history of South Asia, especially in terms of interactions between multiple religious and linguistic communities. Studying changes over time, it also interrogates distinctions such as tradition/modernity and folk/classical, paying attention to the role of caste and gendered labor in making such categories. The course incorporates significant audio-visual components, including paintings, music recordings, and films.
