Description
Seminar exploring California history from its pre-contact indigenous lifeways to the modern era of globalization. We will focus on blending classic works of scholarship on the state, primary sources, and new research. Topics include traditional indigenous knowledge, Spanish colonization, Gold Rush, Chinese immigration/exclusion, industrial development, World War II, the cultural and political changes of the 1960s, immigration, indigenous sovereignty, and globalization of the California economy. Prerequisites: upper-division standing and consent of instructor. Department stamp required.
