Description
This course will introduce students to a range of topics in Yiddish fiction and culture. It will include an introduction to the thousand-year-old Germanic language, spoken by most Jews of Europe before World War II. The course will introduce students to a period, genre, or writer in Yiddish. These topics may range from Old Yiddish to gender in Yiddish fiction, Yiddish poetry, contemporary Yiddish culture, Soviet Yiddish literature, or Yiddish film. May be taken for credit up to three times.
